The Massachusetts Museum Scene

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has a wide array of exhibits covering everything from ancient Egypt to French Impressionism. More French Impressionism can be found at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. For a more mainstream type of truly American art, there’s the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. It houses the largest collection of Rockwell drawings and paintings anywhere. For more contemporary art, there’s Mass MoCA in North Adams. Architecture enthusiasts who like a touch of the odd should also stop by Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, in her former Venetian palace of a home.

For those interested in history, check out the Boston Tea Party Ships, where actors re-enact one of the key events in the nation’s founding. Not far from there is the John F. Kennedy Presidential Museum and Library, with exhibits on Kennedy’s debate with Richard Nixon, the Cuban Missile Crisis and more – there’s a second Kennedy museum in Hyannis.

Also, in Boston, is the interactive USS Constitution Museum, where you get a sense what it was like to serve in the Navy 200 years ago. If you want to know more about living during the American Revolution, take a ride, not at midnight, to the Paul Revere House. For a look at the past and the future, there’s Boston’s Museum of Science. If the weather is nice and you’re up for a boat ride to Nantucket, go there to see the Whaling Museum, which features much more than a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton, but that might be enough to lure the kids. Want to skip the water? New Bedford has its own Whaling Museum.

For a murderous piece of history, there’s the Lizzie Borden House in Fall River. For something a little more quaint there’s the House of Seven Gables in Salem. Salem is also home to the Peabody Essex Museum, featuring New England art and culture. As you might expect in spooky Salem, there’s also Count Orlok’s Nightmare Gallery Monster Museum, and Witch House, which dates back the 17th century Salem witch trials

Lastly, if you don’t want to trek around Boston or the whole state, just visit Harvard University in Cambridge, which has its own art museum, own natural history museum, and museums on science and culture, and more.
